  The mystery part was clumsily written, too much subtext for readers of this genre who tend to skim words and need a bit more stating of the what the author might consider obvious. Some of the narratives were beautifully evocative, and many characters were endearing despite cultural preconceptions (tea drinking Brits, food before anything else French, immaculately dressed Italians), and the description and background of the artwork featured was quite interesting for the uninitiated.

  The story starts off quite promising but unfortunately, it seems the double-double cross entangles with the paint-overs is abit difficult to follow. There are tid bits on art symbolism and iconography which serve as good ground work for more exploration into this obscure topic. Can't help thinking that the author is following the formula of The Da Vinci Code but just didn't quite make it.

  I was attracted to this book because it is set in the world of art and art theft, and because I was once an art history student. But that's about all that this book has to recommended itself to me. The plot is rather far-fetched and some things are just not solved in the end. Also, the characters don't really come alive and the style is a bit too "literary" for my taste. A bit of a disappointment this one.
