  • A serious narrative about "how a suicide bomber gets born"... a female suicide bomber in this case. Very interesting...almost sad.

Who would have thought that the author of this book was in fact a retired Algerian Army Commandant who for years led the fight against terrorism, and that he only started writing under his wife's name when the army demanded he submit his manuscripts to them for censorship before publication.
Here is the sort of book that challenges our thinking about the beliefs and way of life of a modern day terrorist, and the reason why a terrorist takes this route to deal with injustice. Set in the context of a novel, in the same way that Dickens set his challenges to society on the way the poor were treated in 19th century Britain, the author explores the mindset of a terrorist and the effect of terrorism on others.
It is an exciting book, and one that raises questions: How was Amin Jaafari able to go so long without detecting a change in his wife's behaviour? After all he was not only an intelligent man but one used to dealing patients and their recovery. Is a suicide bomber able to control what must be a heightened state of excitement from friends and family?
I found the whole plot deeply moving, and tried to imagine what I would feel like if 'betrayed' by my wife in this or any other way. But it is impossible to imagine such a state or situation. When two people put their trust in one another, and have done so for a number of years - as in the case of Amin and his wife - it is not easy to envision an imaginary scenario and the resultant feelings or behaviour.
