  This is the first book of the series to introduce new running characters (up til now most characters, with the exception of the Baudelaires, Mr Poe, and Count Olaf and his henchmen, only appear on scene and then disappear or die). Isadora and Duncan Quagmire, the remains of a set of triplets, connect with the Baudelaire children because they also have lost family to a fire and they also are heirs to a large fortune. They're the first characters other than the Baudelaires that you feel sympathetic to, as well.

  It's a good part of the series.
