  Awful book. I longed to read it for ages, since I read a short passage on my anthology book in my second year at junior high.
  Sadly, I have to say this book fully disappointed me, and Esther really irritated me.
  I would have wanted to slap her hard in the face for being so dull. At one point I really hoped for her to succeed in her suicide attempts.
  I want to state that I know what depression is, having experienced it myself but, seriously, the character of Esther has no real reason for being depressed.
  She is just a spoiled girl who has grown up surrounded by people who continuously tell her how clever she is (although I cannot believe an intelligent person would really get surprised to discover that studying English literature from Beowulf to present days is compulsory to be an English teacher... what a surprise, isn't it?), used to win prizes for her writing...
  She does have no father nor much money, but I personally know more than one person in the same situation and I cannot truly believe this to be a state which leads to committing suicide.
  I simply hated Esther, although I have to admit S. Plath's prose to be very good.
  Hope she wasn't as stupid as her character.

  I like the image of the bell jar, separating you from the world out there. I've never felt a jar, but a glass pane that would keep me a step away from reach of what was going on around me.

  Se c'è un libro che ha ingannato le mie aspettative, è sicuramente questo. Per fortuna si è rivelato essere molto meglio di quel che pensavo. Non sono un'amante della poesia, e non conosco quella di Sylvia Plath, anche se ho letto i suoi diari quindi so qualcosa della sua vita. La cosa che mi ha stupito di più è che questo è un libro divertente - nel senso che è scritto con un grandissimo senso dello humour, e anche se la storia che racconta è ovviamente molto triste (angosciante poi se pensiamo che di fatto è autobiografica e come poi è finita la vita della Plath) leggerla non risulta deprimente. Anzi, forse in qualche bizzarra maniera è addirittura positiva.

  Esther Greenwood è una studentessa modello, lanciatissima nei suoi studi e già insignita di numerosi premi e riconoscimenti. Quando poi vince la possibilità di lavorare come editor per una rivista di New York per un mese, il futuro sembra davvero brillare, cosa che Esther apprezza particolarmente, provenendo da una famiglia non agiata. Eppure una volta a New York un'ombra sembra oscurare la vita di Esther, che non riesce più a credere nei suoi obiettivi e ad impegnarsi per costruirsi la vita desiderata.

  Con il passare del tempo e il ritorno a casa, in un tranquillo sobborgo di periferia la situazione peggiora: a Esther viene rifiutata la partecipazione a un corso di scrittura per lei importantissimo. Pian piano la mente di Esther si allontana sempre più dagli assurdi ed inutili sgambettamenti che noi chiamiamo vita e comincia a meditare il suicidio.

  Nonostante questo romanzo sia stato scritto negli anni Cinquanta, sembra scritto ieri. Se le forme sociali cambiano un po', di fatto i problemi delle donne sono sempre gli stessi: come fare a conciliare un lavoro importante con la famiglia? Come fare a conciliare la nostra essenza con una scelta di vita di successo? Come resistere alle pressioni della società? Credo che anche le persone più sane fra noi abbiano talvolta provato quella sensazione di sfinitezza, di insensatezza, per cui per qualche minuto viene voglia di buttare tutto a mare e mettersi a letto per non uscirne più. Ma al di là di questo è universale la voglia di vivere e di costruirsi una vita e dall'altra parte i dubbi, le incertezze, la paura di non riuscire. E' per questo che The Bell Jar è un libro così universale. Da leggere.

  The first time I read this book I hated it.
  The second time around I understood why. This book speaks of a slithering disease that affects many of us in its silent, shameful way. Back then it whispered to my heart unwanted truths and I refused to listen.
  It's a deep journey in the miserable condition of a young woman fighting to survive. It's truthful and scary, at times, and full of sorrow and hope.
  It gave me so much in the end I still hold it as one of my favourites. Yet... I wouldn't recommend it to anyone suffering from depression, especially a girl. Reading your own feelings so well depicted on the page is a difficult experience and knowing a bit of the writer's biography doesn't help.
