The black company remains pretty much the only fantasy series that I still like. It's a dark and dismal world where the sorcerers don't have much power, where there are terrifying evil women controlling everything and there really is no good side. Unlike the warhammer books though the evil all turns out to be very sympathetic. There are always many sides to the different factions and both the heros and the bad guys do horrible and great things. I've re-read this series of books more time than possibly anything except Harry Potter. Last couple times I've read it though I've started half way through the series and so it's nice to go back and see all the old characters, alive and well and to get everyone's first impressions of each other. Knowing how things play out only makes the books that more enjoyable as you can laugh at the different reactions people have to start with. (Not to mention that someone gets referred to with the wrong gender throughout the book).

Re-reading these again it's easy to see why I still love them. They are grim. They are mostly character driven. The most powerful characters are nearly all women and while they are not the main focus of the story they are the ones who dictate the events and who are central to what happens. There is even a nice style to the writing and some great turns of phrase. I feel a little guilty re-reading books when I have so many lovely new books waiting to be read but I'm really enjoying re-reading this series. At the moment I am definitely wanting to re-read all of them.

  • A frontline fantasy

How would it be like "The Lord of the Rings" if told by a grunt?
The Black Company is the answer: you won't find noble heroes in shining armor, damsels in distress or know-it-all pointy eared elfs, there is war, mud, blood and savage magic.
