In six minutes, one of us would be dead. None of us knew it was coming... So says Wes Holloway, a once-cocky and ambitious presidential aide, about the day that changed his life forever. On that Fourth of July, Wes put Ron Boyle, the chief executive's oldest friend, into the presidential limousine. By the time the trip came to an end, Wes was permanently disfigured, and Boyle was dead, the victim of a crazed assassin. Eight years later, Boyle is spotted, alive and well, in Malaysia. In that moment, Wes has the chance to undo the worst day of his life. Trying to figure out what really happened takes Wes back to a decade-old presidential crossword puzzle, mysterious facts buried in Masonic history, and a two-hundred-year-old code invented by Thomas Jefferson. But what Wes doesn't realize is that The Book of Fate holds everyone's secrets. Especially the ones worth dying for. The Book of Fate. What does it say about you? [예스24 제공]

I picked it up in a lazy afternoon this summer. The back cover promised an entertaining action story along the lines of the Da Vinci Code. I could not get myself to finish it! It was a pain to read. The action was described but not felt. The author seemed to be writing like a pretentious schoolboy. Not only, but the idiosyncratic spelling in some cases when trying to report spoken language was too irritating for me. Maybe it is just me, but at one point one character says:"My speaking Spanish?". From the context I understood it too mean:"Am I speaking Spanish?" but I found it irritating. Not exactly how I wanted to spend a relaxing summer afternoon.

  • It started with good pacing and premise, unfortunately it became a bit bore in the middle, and I don't like the Masonic code thing even though the author had spent 3 years researching on it. However, I still enjoy it, though not as much as his previous works.

  • Though well written and with a great pacing, this book was a bit of a disappointment to me.

Probably that "code" thing in the cover's review quote, and the whole masonic theme conned my expectations. I thought this was a Da Vinci Code kind of book, with no crappy writing. Instead I found out ... (continue)

Probably that "code" thing in the cover's review quote, and the whole masonic theme conned my expectations. I thought this was a Da Vinci Code kind of book, with no crappy writing. Instead I found out a good thriller with a little of espionage and more cliches that I was keen to tolerate.
