A controversial national best seller upon its initial publication, The Book of J is an audacious work of literary restoration revealing one of the great narratives of all time and unveiling its mysterious author. J is the title that scholars ascribe to the nameless writer they believe is responsible for the text, written between 950 and 900 BCE, on which Genesis, Exodus, and Numbers is based. In The Book of J, accompanying David Rosenberg's translation, Harold Bloom persuasively argues that J was a woman—very likely a woman of the royal house at King Solomon's court—and a writer of the stature of Homer, Shakespeare, and Tolstoy. Rosenberg's translations from the Hebrew bring J's stories to life and reveal her towering originality and grasp of humanity. Bloom argues in several essays that "J" was not a religious writer but a fierce ironist. He also offers historical context, a discussion of the theory of how the different texts came together to create the Bible, and translation notes.

  • Bloom’s Bible

Everybody, pretty well, says that the Authorised Version of the Bible is a national and more than national treasure, never to be surpassed. And yet everyone we listen to, down to those who read the lessons in our parish church, proceeds on the assump ... (read full critics)

  • It’s A Girl!

I remember my surprise when a student of mine wrote a paper about the book of Job, and referred to the author throughout as “he or she.” Perhaps such even-handedness is now standard in North America, but it certainly isn’t in Oxford. But I realized t ... (read full critics)

  • From the foundations, pretty much

It seems that the books of the Torah (on which the Old Testament is based) weren't written with religious intents, but rather to tell the child-like tale of the Jewish people and of their God ("Yahweh" according to one writer, very likely a woman scholars name "J", "Elohim" according to later, more ... It seems that the books of the Torah (on which the Old Testament is based) weren't written with religious intents, but rather to tell the child-like tale of the Jewish people and of their God ("Yahweh" according to one writer, very likely a woman scholars name "J", "Elohim" according to later, more orthodox writers, "Lord" for pretty much everybody else.)
This "J" writer was an ironic lady who wasn't content with her day's political situation. That's why some of the biblical stories seem so frustratingly non-blessed; their intent was to have people understand that the past was greater than the present (where "the present" is 900 years BC and counting). No-one, apparently, really wanted to create a sacred text in which Yahweh is jealous of humans, wants to kill them out of seemingly no reason (except for his, or should I write HIS vanity) and still is omnipotent.
The work of Rosenberg and Bloom is an eye-opener on matters regarding the book that represents the foundation for a couple of major religious. Not very facetious.
