My advice to anyone planning to read The Book of Lost Tales, is to read The Silmarillion first.
This will make the narration easier to follow and the many references easier to understand, for The Book of Lost Tales contains for the most part drafts and early writings that led to the final form of The Silmarillion.
For the same reason, the content of the book is in my opinion much more of a philological interest rather than a narrative one.
