"It's got nothing to do with religion, it's got nothing to do with mental stability, but it has everything to do with the human mind's natural instinct, which is to hope beyond all hope, unless you're a cynical bastard. It's got to do with love, with losing somebody you love, a part of you being torn away that you'd do almost anything or believe anything to have returned to you. It's hope that some day you'll see them again, that you can still feel them near you. Hope like that, as I thought before, doesn't make you a weak person. It's hopelessness that makes you weak. Hope makes you stronger, because it brings with it a sense of reason. Not a reason for how or why they were taken from you, but a reason for you to live. Because it's a maybe. A 'maybe someday things won't always be this shit.' And that 'maybe' immediately makes the shittiness better."

But I can't give to Ahern's novels more than three stars, I don't know, there was so much potential in this book but she has not exploited it. Everything happens in the last pages, too much too late. But as I said the story isn't bad and the mysteries that surround it make it interesting. Three stars and a half

Sorry for my bad english, is not my native language ;)

This book completely surprised me. EVen before I started reading it I had almost made up my mind to give it three stars. I was sure it was a typical chick-lit read. But it is actually more than that. I would go so far as to say it is almost a thriller. There is no way, in the beginning of the book, to guess how it will end. It does at times seem to be a book about the supernatural it even hints at being a ghost story, but then the plot turns and the reader must ask her/himself - if it is not a ghost than what is going on?

I had trouble getting in to the book, even though the language was quite beautiful. The main character is 16 years old and I think I just had trouble being interested in what she wrote. Her name is Tamara and her dad had committed suicide by drinking whiskey and taking sleeping pills. He has ended up putting the family in big financial trouble and Tamara's mum and Tamara have to sell their luxury villa and move out to the Irish countryside and live with Tamara's uncle Arthur and auntie Rosaleen. Not a big hit with the spoilt teenager and she does her best to make life miserable for everyone. At the same time the author hints at Tamara having a good hart and that she is acting out only to try and get the world to give her some attention. Tamara is slowly changing her ways, but then her eyes opens up to that something strange is going on... At this point I have trouble putting it down.

On the first page of the book Tamara talks about how different people look at the world and see completely different things. She admires people that are openminded and I think following quote is lovely:

"Those people are either born that way or, as babies, when their minds are like little buds, they are nurtured until their petals slowly open and prepare for the very nature of life to feed them. As the rain falls and the sun shines, they grow, grow, grow; minds open they go through life aware and accepting, seeing light where there's dark, seeing possibility in dead ends, tasting victory as others spit out failure, questioning when others accept. Just a little less jaded, a little less cynical" (p. 1).

I also want to give you a little taste of what the book is about, sure there is a little romance in it, but it is definitely not about romance. It is about family and caring for those you love. It is about believing in yourself and that if you can be strong enough to see the truth, you can also be strong enough to live with it and learn to love you family and your life for what they are rather than what you thought you wanted them to be.

"All families have their secrets, most people would never know them, but they know there are spaces, there are gaps where answers should be, where someone should have sat, where someone used to be. A name that is never uttered, or uttered once and never again. We all have our secrets" (p. 317).

Tension is high at a certain point - slightly remembers thrillers' - and you don't even know why. It simply comes out of the mistery wrapping some characters we won't totally understand until the very end of the book.
    Pleasant and nice.
