This holocaust book is written from the viewpoint of a very naive 9-year-old boy who doesn't understand what is going on around him. Bruno's father is Commandant of Auschwitz and Bruno doesn't know why he has to live in an ugly house of only three stories when there are so many children on the other side of the fence. Walking along the fence one day, he sees a boy in striped pajamas on the other side of the fence. This new friend Smuel, although living in the Auschwitz camp, is also oblivious to much of what is going on there; his family is apparantly trying to protect him from the worst horrors of the camp.
