  • THE BRASS VERDICT

The Brass Verdict is Michael Connelly’s second outing with unorthodox LA defence lawyer Mickey Haller. It’s as clever and absorbing as The Lincoln Lawyer - which is to say very clever and absorbing indeed - and has the added interest for Connelly fan ... (read full critics)

    Everybody lies.
Cops lie. Lawyers lie. Witnesses lie. The victims lie.

    Everybody lies.
Cops lie. Lawyers lie. Witnesses lie. The victims lie.
A trial is a contest of lies. And everybody in the courtroom knows this. The judge knows this. Even the jury knows this. They come into the building knowing they will be lied to. They take their seats in the box and agree to be lied to.
The trick if you are sitting at the defense table is to be patient. To wait. Not for just any lie. But for the one you can grab on to and forge like hot iron into a sharpened blade. You then use that blade to rip the case open and spill its guts out on the floor.

Los Angeles was the kind of place where everyboday was from somewhere else and nobady really dropped anchor.

It was a transient place.People drawn by the dream, people running from the nightmare.Twelve million people and all of them ready to make a break for it if necessary.

Figuratively,Literally,metaphoricallly-any way you want to look at it-everybody in L.A. keep a bag packed.Just in case.(The Brass Verdict-Michael Connelly p.74)
