As good a preparation for meeting foreign cultures as "The Sentinel" was - if a bit on the lengthy side.
Obviously an early work and less ambitious than later Pratchett masterpieces, still very enjoyable.
Some of the insights are as deep and illuminating, and enjoyable as the best in "Feet of Clay" or "Monstrous Regiment", such as:
- "Bromeliad" - sounding just right as name for a tale of long travel in strange places to us with our Greek-Roman roots
- different people have different strengths and purposes, and will take up different kind of new challenges - reading, traveling, tinkering with things, leading. It does take all sorts to get through.
The final message about religion in a diverse world is probably the most satisfactory of all: suppose you are one in a small unique community ignorant of others like you; suppose you and your pals get to discover that, so now your tribe is one of many, each with their world view, gods and principles. Then, who is the best to spread the message of what you found out to the many who have yet to get it?
Yes, the priest who fought the new discoveries to the bitter end.
Maybe we will be as lucky as the Nomes in meeting other tribes from other flowers.
