New Directions celebrates the Pablo Neruda Centennial. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Pablo Neruda's birth, New Directions is pleased to announce the reissue of a classic work in a timeless translation by Donald D. Walsh and fully bilingual.

The Captain's Verses was first published anonymously in 1952, some years before Neruda married Matilde Urrutia - the one with "the fire / of an unchained meteor" - to whom he had addressed these poems of love, ecstasy, devotion, and fury. Our bilingual edition is seen by many as the most intimate and passionate volume of Neruda's love poetry, capturing all the erotic energy of a new love.

The first Pablo Neruda poem I ever read was used as the lyrics to a song by the same name (though translated into English) composed by Imant Raminsh, "La rama robada". The song is beautifully written and highly compliments the vivid language of Neruda's poem. After singing the lyrics in English, I had a strong desire to read it in its original Spanish, but couldn't find it anywhere online. Instead, I went out and found the book that contained it and bought it right then and there. If you love tender, minimalistic poems or foreign language poetry, you will love this work. This particular copy is the bi-lingual edition, something I appreciate. The page on the left contains the original Spanish, while the page on the right translates into English. Good for readers just getting into Spanish or into foreign language poetry in general while still maintaining the untarnished glory of the poem in its original language. Very highly recommended.
