Kyra lives with her father, his three wives and her twenty brothers and sisters within a polygamist cult known as The Chosen Ones. They are led by The Prophet who is assisted by the Apostles - when The Prophet speaks, then The Chosen Few jump.
Kyra has known no other life than this, except for in the novels that she secretly reads. She slips away from the compound and visits the mobile library each week. Patrick the librarian befriends her and introduces her to another world, where children are not treated as possessions, where girls of 13 are not expected to marry their 60 year old Uncles, where each family has only one Mum. Kyra loves her family but she feels different, she has a rebellious streak and it is this that leads to her downfall.
