Doctors are not trained properly, they learn only the basis of medicine at the medical schools. Moreover, according to him there are too many doctors whose only thought is to make money. A doctor shouldn't try to make money out of sick people, it isn’t honest. He blames his colleagues because of their inadequacy, incapability and immorality. Andrew Manson is a scrupulous clever and civil young doctor. He is able to appreciate people for their behavior and not because they are rich or powerful. He always tries to improve his knowledge and he makes some important discoveries in the treatment of lung diseases associated to the coal dust contact. Nevertheless, he makes a lot of mistakes, but his main beliefs and his values win on everything. In his fight Dr Mason is not alone, his wife Christine, a young schoolteacher helps him to to bring forth the battle. Christine is a determined woman, she trusts her husband very much and she also wishes to do something useful for the society. Their moral lessons, their brilliant personalities and the plot itself make this novel timeless. A masterpiece!
