The Colour of Magic is Terry Pratchett's maiden voyage through the bizarre land of Discworld. His entertaining and witty series has grown to more than 20 books, and this is where it all starts--with the tourist Twoflower and his hapless wizard guide, Rincewind ("All wizards get like that... it's the quicksilver fumes. Rots their brains. Mushrooms, too."). Pratchett spoofs fantasy clichés--and everything else he can think of--while marshalling a profusion of characters through a madcap adventure. The Colour of Magic is followed by The Light Fantastic.

    Beautiful edition!

"The Colour of Magic" plus "The Light Fantastic" in a single book, signed by pTerry (I've already ordered a signed copy of "Making Money", too! ^___^)

    The first Discworld book

Pratchett didn't really seem to dare to deviate from the easy path of slapstick humour with this one. Nevertheless, it's easy to see some themes touched upon that he decided to spin some more in later stories.

It's a weird feeling, re-reading the first Discworld book after finishing the entire saga. You can sense quite well that the Discworld was only in its gestating stage in the mind of Pterry, relying heavily on other fantasy work (it is a parody, after all, even if a really intelligent one with an original story tying everything together) and often contradicting what we'll learn in later books.
This has never been one of my favourites, and it has only glimpses of the literary beauty to come (and that's the reason why I usually advice new readers to start from the 3rd book), but it's still enjoyable of course.

  • First Pratchett

This was my first Pratchett novel ever. I liked it, but am not so sure if I like it enough to go on reading the Discworld series. We'll see....
