In The Crossing, Cormac McCarthy fulfills the promise of All the Pretty Horses and at the same time give us a work that is darker and more visionary, a novel with the unstoppable momentum of a classic western and the elegaic power of a lost American myth.

In the late 1930s, sixteen-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch.  But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico.  With that crossing, he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat-lightning--a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there."

An essential novel by any measure, The Crossing is luminous and appalling, a book that touches, stops, and starts the heart and mind at once.

Critics

  • Where the hell?

Cormac McCarthy comes to us with a tremendous reputation: not only the National Book Award but a critical chorus comparing him to Melville, Shakespeare, Conrad, Faulkner, Dostoevsky. There have also been voices crying hokum, but not many. The Crossin ... (read full critics)

  • Beautifully written , as always. Not a word is misplaced, or useless, or in eccess.
Lovable Characters, and a great love and faith in human beings. Some of them, at least.

This book leaves me breathless. Unfortunately not necessarily in a good way. Some parts of it are just phenomenal: you would want to read them again and again. Some other parts, though, are so dull, slow, meaningless, that it is almost impossible not to toss the book away. It is a roller coaster, and at the end you feel nausea even if you enjoyed parts of the ride.

As for the story, the book leaves no hope. "Shit happens", could be the brief summary, and there is nothing you can do to avoid it.

One thing I love about the book is the perfect blend between English and Spanish. I am not sure how they managed to transmit this in translation, but if you can read English and Spanish, do yourself a favour, and read the original version.
