When Rilke, a dissolute and promiscuous auctioneer, comes upon a hidden collection of seemingly violent photographs, he feels compelled to unearth more about the deceased owner who coveted them. What follows is a compulsive journey of discovery, decadence, and deviousness that leads Rilke into a dark underworld of transvestite clubs, seedy bars, and porn shops. In this hidden city haunted by a host of vividly drawn characters, Rilke comes face to face with the dark desires and illicit urges that lurk behind even the most respectable facades.

  • 'The Cutting Room' by Louise Welsh

Every now and then I sometimes stumble across a book that grips me in such a way I can barely put it down and, when I do, I count down the hours until I can pick it up again. Welsh's debut novel fits right into that category. Not only that, but the s ... (read full critics)

I didn't have any particular expectations of this book when I started it. What a lovely surprise - excellent plotting and pace, but most importantly, a great lead character. I really felt like I was getting to know Rilke as he navigated his way through his different worlds - auction houses, gay clubs, seedy backstreet shops and other views of a Glasgow you wouldn't see at a first glance. Highly recommended!

  • Great, gritty Glasgow!
No need to bother with her later books though, unfortunately.

  • Ok

It's not bad for a debut novel. The story is not a great mystery but its ending is a bit unexpected.
