It let people, especially Western people, to understand the situation of poverty in China. However, these diaries happened between 2000 and 2001, which has great difference in years from now. Through these years, China have experienced and changed a lot. As telecommunication improved, economy developed rapidly, China is becoming more and more open to the world. Is story like Ma Yan still happening somewhere in China after these years? We don't know. But we are sure that more or less, the number of children like Ma Yan is decreasing. I do not agree what the writer wrote. The writer's opinion reflects he had not been to the remote parts of China. Though the economy was very good on the coast, much of inland was poor. It may be striking to say girls still struggle to go to school. Yan's story was a good example to let the outsiders to see the reality of Chinese society. Her story still stands form many unspoken today. Also when Yan wrote the diary, she was in her early teen. She just wrote what she thought. The diary was never meant to be published when she wrote but by chance her mom passed it to a French photographer. It is not fair to say other girls are lazy when they were in her shoe. The education and (to project further career option)in China poor village is very complicated. No one can say it clearly. Moreover, is it going to high school or college works the best for everyone? Learning a trade is not? Everyone has an unique path. This cannot be said in several sentences.
