When I think of the happy times at school, I can almost imagine myself there. How I want to study! I want to go to school, Mother. How wonderful if I could stay at school forever!' - Ma Yan, aged 13 In a remote province in Northeastern China, in May 2001, the journalist Pierre Haski and his group are preparing to leave the tiny village they have been visiting. Suddenly a peasant woman approaches and urgently thrusts into their hands a letter, written on the back of a seed packet, and three small brown notebooks filled with characters in a finely drawn pencil. When their precious bundle is translated, they are astonished to find they hold thirteen-year-old Ma Yan's diary and a passionate letter she'd written to her mother, headed, I Want To Study. The Diary of Ma Yan tells the moving tale of a spirited girl who wants to overcome her impoverished life, who prefers to go hungry in order to save money to buy a pen, who feels deeply for her mother, and her young brother . It let people, especially Western people, to understand the situation of poverty in China. However, these diaries happened between 2000 and 2001, which has great difference in years from now. Through these years, China have experienced and changed a lot. As telecommunication improved, economy developed rapidly, China is becoming more and more open to the world. Is story like Ma Yan still happening somewhere in China after these years? We don't know. But we are sure that more or less, the number of children like Ma Yan is decreasing. This book had not only showed the poverty of China, but in deeper meaning, it also showed the thoughts and actions towards her by different people around her from the experience of Ma Yan. These things were deeply affected by the Chinese traditional thinking, her sex and her social status. It had shown the inequality between villagers and citizens, between boys and girls, between the rich and the poor, etc. In a much deeper meaning, it had shown the thinking and attitude of Ma Yan herself. I must said that her thoughts can't represent all the other girls having the same situation like Ma Yan, as there may be some girls having same situation like Ma Yan but very lazy. But she is a typical example of all other poor girls in China....Continua Nascondi
I do not agree what the writer wrote. The writer's opinion reflects he had not been to the remote parts of China. Though the economy was very good on the coast, much of inland was poor. It may be striking to say girls still struggle to go to school. Yan's story was a good example to let the outsiders to see the reality of Chinese society. Her story still stands form many unspoken today. Also when Yan wrote the diary, she was in her early teen. She just wrote what she thought. The diary was never meant to be published when she wrote but by chance her mom passed it to a French photographer. It is not fair to say other girls are lazy when they were in her shoe. The education and (to project further career option)in China poor village is very complicated. No one can say it clearly. Moreover, is it going to high school or college works the best for everyone? Learning a trade is not? Everyone has an unique path. This cannot be said in several sentences.
