  • I picked this up because it was supposed to appeal to those who enjoyed the Da Vinci Code, and in my case, that was right on - I loved it. If you are a chess fan, then you might particularly enjoy it, though I'm not and still loved the book. Big chase around the planet, with lots of riddles/puzzles to figure out. If you did *not* like the Da Vinci Code, I would definitely avoid this one.

I stumbled on this book via a chess website and it turned out to be pretty decent. Following two parallel story lines, one in the 1970's and one in the 1790's, The Eight tells the story of a legendary chess service that contains a secret that people are willing to kill for.

While similar in nature to The Davinci Code, The Eight suffers in that it covers an imaginary artifact made prominent in a time period that many people don't know (or care) much about. The result is that unless the reader has some chess background, the hook of the story is less relevant.

The prose is awkward in some places and some of the asides are overly long. I much preferred the 1970's storyline to the older one, but overall the book was fairly compelling.

When I was told about it, they said "If you like The DaVinci Code, you'll like this one" so I was expecting this great read, however, it wasn't quite as suspenceful The DaVinci Code. Neville jumped between th 1790s and the 1970s which at first was a little bit confusing, but then I thought it made the book a lot more interesting. I can't say that I would overwhelmingly recommend this to others, but if people like a little suspence and history then yes. Also if they were interested in chess.
