Have always been fascinated by books about India /west meets east, ever since I read Passage to India at university. This, my first book by Theroux has not disappointed me.
The three rather long short stories are very slightly intertconnected- they narrate the experience of modern day India and its ageless culture the three protagonists gain in their travels, 3 Americans of different age groups and expectations. Some of their adventures and travel impressions can be easily recognizable by anyone who has been there once in his life.
The endings of each story have an unexpected twist that hits you hard, which reminds me of some other contemporary English-speaking novelists.
The swami's response to Alice's predicament is very simuilar to the rabbis'counselling in the latest movie by the Cohen bros.
