  I think Graham Greene has been one of the most pleasant discoveries of my reader's life.
  I was drawn to his books thanks to the Neil Jordan's film "The end of the affair". I loved the movie and thought that such a beautiful story did have to belong to a good writer.
  I was not disappointed, for Graham Greene is a great author, he makes you cry (and a lot) in books like The end of the affair, and he makes you laugh out loud as well in books like Travels with my aunt.
  As for The end of the affair, you can't but love every sad bit of it.

  Probably read in a moment in which the novel's atmosphere doesn't really suit my spirit!
  Re-reading needed!
  The story of an affair that ends without the end of love. Hate (how many times do the words hate/hatred appear?) entangled with love, passion and fury, despair and revenge for all is now(seems, maybe?) lost.
  Fog, mist, some kind of sticky rain, this grey sky (or at least, I imagined it grey) hanging over the characters are the weather's response to narrator's feelings.
  And this sort of oppressive air is at the same time hiding and revealing things and people: a detective inquiring, spying, throwing dust and rummaging through waste-paper bins, a jealous ex-lover craving for his report, and at the same time disgusted by this intruding activity; a husband who knows and ignore, and in the end needs his wife's lover to carry on his own life; a mother and a secret baptism, a woman and her vow never admitted nor explained (why?)...
  Above all the presence of God. A strange, mysterious, obscure and dumb God, whose existence is questioned every page, becoming in fact an oppressive presence on people's lives.
  Very little tenderness, for a love affair, and a constant question: "Do I love you, even tough I hate you? Or maybe just because I hate you?"
  And if I hate you, does it mean that I believe in You? Am I loving you through my hate?
  A bit too wearying for me, at the moment!

  Poche parole che sanno trasmettere il senso dell'esistenza di un mondo intero dietro una serata di pioggia: è così che sento di definire lo stile di Graham Greene dopo aver letto questo romanzo.

  Poche parole che sanno trasmettere il senso dell'esistenza di un mondo intero dietro una serata di pioggia: è così che sento di definire lo stile di Graham Greene dopo aver letto questo romanzo.

  Non si tratta di una storia d'amore, così come non si tratta del "comune amore umano": il comune corrotto amore umano non serve che a vivere meglio, non è che uno strumento nelle mani degli uomini; questa storia è intrisa di un sentimento che non lascia vivere, che distrugge l'esistenza come neanche la guerra può fare, che è ossessione, paura della fine di qualcosa che si desidera troppo e della quale ci si sente immeritevoli, paura della solitudine, di quel "deserto" che, alla fine dell'amore, sempre attende quelli che hanno osato amare veramente.
  L'amore, che non ha necessariamente bisogno di essere raccontato da chi l'ha vissuto, lascia spazio ad un desiderio talmente forte da distruggersi con la propria forza, e che nasce da una troppo netta consapevolezza di una fine che si rivela in ogni gesto, in ogni parola, nella possibilità dell'esistenza di un dio, nella malattia, nel tempo, dai quali ci si sente strappare la vita di mano senza rimedio. E' la consapevolezza della fine che uccide, non la fine in sé, poiché i sentimenti, per svanire, richiedono che ci sia sempre un uomo ad accompagnarli alla morte.

  La traduzione ha il grande merito di rendere bene il sapore dei tempi in cui il libro è stato scritto, e soprattutto di quelli in cui è ambientato. In alcuni punti (pochi) non è del tutto fedele al testo, come io ritengo debba essere una traduzione, ma sono stata felice di constatare, leggendo il libro in lingua originale, che l'impressione generale che ne deriva è esattamente la stessa.
  Fortunatamente il traduttore (che tra l'altro riesce in buona misura a rinunciare al protagonismo tipico della categoria) evita di trasformare il romanzo in un piatto manuale della lingua italiana, lasciando qua e là trasparire alcune comprensibilissime peculiarità della lingua inglese (che riflettono il modo di pensare di un popolo e di uno scrittore) e utilizzando belle parole antiche che lasciano intravedere la reale atmosfera degli anni Trenta e Quaranta del Novecento.
  Trovo abbastanza ridicoli, addirittura fantasiosi, quei romanzi ambientati nell'Ottocento, scritti in stile 2000, che inevitabilmente (chissà come mai?!) non riescono a penetrare a fondo i tempi e i luoghi di cui trattano.

  Anche se alla fine niente sembra finire bene in questo piccolo e denso libro ed il protagonista sembra restare triste ed astioso, arrabbiato e solo col suo dolore, al tempo stesso ti lascia dentro un senso d'amore, disperazione ed invincibilità che non te lo togli più dal cuore e l'invocazione, la s ...   Anche se alla fine niente sembra finire bene in questo piccolo e denso libro ed il protagonista sembra restare triste ed astioso, arrabbiato e solo col suo dolore, al tempo stesso ti lascia dentro un senso d'amore, disperazione ed invincibilità che non te lo togli più dal cuore e l'invocazione, la sfida finale di Bendrix è la vittoria dell'amore umano e della speranza.
