The core of this book, about the origins of group theory and the lives of mathematicians Galois and Abel is the perfect combination of biography and mathematics. The presentations of Galois' life here pays due attention to his non-mathematical passions; as a result his death becomes less of a romantic cliche.
The author's explanation of why Galois' theory was so important and changed maths so dramatically is satisfyingly solid and detailed but can still be followed by a non-mathematician.
The story meanders a bit at the end when trying to link symmetry to newer topics such as evolutionary psychology and 12 tone music. It left me wanting more clarity and detail about the '30 years war' and why that was important.
Highly recommended.
