  I finished The Ersatz Elevator on the way into work this morning (bless the tube strike). I thought it didn't seem quite horrid enough, the large apartment seemed a bit too cushy, but I did really like the horrid dark, and the trips down the elevator shaft, and overall enjoyed it quite a bit.

  When I start reading the book, I knew that Esme was going to steal the the Baudelaire's fortune. The Baudelaire were lucky, because they found out the passage that Count Olaf made.

  I really enjoy this book. For whatever reason, the most ridiculous parts of this book (a baby climbing an elevator shaft using her teeth) amuse me instead of annoy me as they do in some of the other books.
  One of the things that is true of all the books is that the characters are very focused to one behaviour or ability - the orphans are talented as an inventor, a researcher, and a biter, the Quagmire triplets are a poet and a journalist, Mr Poe is best at coughing, Uncle Monty is obsessed with reptiles, and so on. Unfortunately, it's the first book where the repeticious bits annoy me a little. Esme is not just an annoying character because she's meant to be, but she's annoying to read and I wanted too often to skip over bits of it.
