One thing is clear from the first introduction to this book, that Alessandrina’s words resonate with a lyrical touch. Her prose reads like poetry, and her poetry reads like songs, with starkly absorbing black and white images spaced in between.
The refrains between stanzas left me wishing I could hear the melody, as if rhythm and rhyme called out for completion. The words called out for love, divine in the arousal of early morning, “fired up passion,” and “rays of wisdom.” “ The Nectar is Now / Ever so Present” says a line in LOVE…IN YOUR HAND, with love leaving no fear, and lighting the dark, just as promised in the introduction.
A stylized image of bamboo shoots is beautifully place before a poem that starts in early morning, drawing the reader’s gaze to a world seen through glass. And the poem ends with a beautiful childlike drawing of interconnected physical and spiritual worlds. Pictures almost substitute for song, providing visual music to the words.
“Time, love and life all fly
    The wheel passes you by
    No time to live
    No time to smile”
is the refrain from RUNNING, which draws the reader from frantic rush into a place of freedom and feeling. Some of the words remind me of favorite songs that my sons listen to, but the poem I KNOW YOUR PAIN startled me with its reminder of my own teenage years. Perhaps I should have looked closer at the image preceding it. “I was just a kid” breathes a refrain revealing scars that only love can heal, “But this voice in my head / All the ‘no goods’ it fed,” eventually leading to the “keys of Eden.”
I finish reading and still want to hear music—I’m almost fitting the words to tunes I must have heard before, and perhaps it’s no accident that they’re tunes from my teenage years. I enjoyed the collection, and I like the way it’s constructed—the flow from love to pain to innocence. The pictures are well-chosen and sometimes deeply affecting, and the overall effect is something more than the sum of its parts.
Alessandrina’s introduction, though lyrical, was not what hooked me, it was her poetry that did, and I enjoyed the book.

The Essence of Love by Alessandrina Lerner is unique collection of poetry and songs, conveying a message of love, hope and healing.  These simple pieces inspire the reader to meditate on the love that bonds us together instead of the hatred and anger that tears the world apart.  Adorned with beautiful artwork created by Alessandrina’s young daughter, this book would make a wonderful gift for art and poetry lovers alike.  I give it four hearts… an easy and uplifting read.

“The Essence of Love’ by Alessandrina Lerner is a book of poetry about the many different types of love she feels. The writer writes in such depth that it pulls you into her world and her thoughts on love.
Some of the poems blew my mind away as they are the same thoughts that I have for someone and the one poem, “Love ain’t…Love is” tells the truth about what love truly is. I would highly recommend this book for anyone that loves poetry especially poetry about love.
