Calpurnia is growing up at the end of the 18th century, in a world in which girls are expected to "come out", marry, and raise a family. Calpurnia, however, grows close to her grandfather and loves to work with him in his laboratory in the back shed, and to look for specimens in the countryside, which they then identify and she describes in her science notebook. She longs to go to university, but knows that her parents don't have that future in mind for her. We don't find out what the future holds for her, but the book ends on a hopeful note.
The reader is too simpering for what should be Calpurnia's voice. You should read it, not listen to it.

  • Calpurnia's life seems like a breeze. Having a grandfather who encourges her to be a naturalist not to mention having six brothers to lean on. But on the other hand she is a free-bee with out any space to fly. In other words she has to come out, of her dream of becoming a naturalist and turning into ... (continue)

Calpurnia's life seems like a breeze. Having a grandfather who encourges her to be a naturalist not to mention having six brothers to lean on. But on the other hand she is a free-bee with out any space to fly. In other words she has to come out, of her dream of becoming a naturalist and turning into a "lady" with parties and dresses for every one of them. So Im saying that being the only girl out of seven you have a lot on your sholders. Read this magnificent story and relax, truly.

  • Interesting vignette into the life of a 11 year old girl living in 1899 rural Texas with 6 brothers. I hope that there is a sequel as I would like to see how Callie Vee's life evolves.
