The book is not merely descriptive but analytical. To start off, Quigley spent a chapter astutely dissecting the nature of man and culture. Then, he identifies seven states of historical change for all civilizations: mixture, gestation, expansion, conflict, universal empire, decay, and invasion. He also of course, in line with his scientific background, meticulously tests out these hypotheses by a detailed analysis of five major civilizations: the Mesopotamian, the Canaanite, the Minoan, the classical, and the Western.
Overall, the book had been a very slow read for me but it's well worth the time.
