Take centuries of British literature, a big bad guy, a different history for the real world and you'll have this novel. Jasper Fforde plays with own rules and wins the game, for the characters are vivid and interesting, all the items created by Mycroft are wonderful and Thursday is a wannahave friend. Narrating what is written in this book isn't simple, for we have lots of crazy events. But it is funny playing with real novels and kidnapping Jane Eyre, among the others, from the pages she is written in.
Twist the time-space and read this book.

What Douglas Adams did for Sci-fi and Terry Pratchett does for fantasy, Jasper Fforde does for the thriller mystery genre. Set in an alternate world where literature is taken much more seriously than our own, The Eyre Affair follows the exploits of Thursday Next, a LiteraTech operative. It's filled with action, references to classic literature, and a sense of whimsy that just makes the book (and the series) fun to read.
Continue

Witty, fast paced ... and so imaginative! I wasn't expecting to like it because of all the hype, but I am now hooked on what Thursday Next will be up to next ...
I first read the fifth book of the Thursday Next's saga, so it's really difficult for me to say if TN's world is an easy one to fit in. I guess yes, because I really enjoyed nr. 5 ("First Among Sequels").

In her first adventure, we meet young and single (sigh!) Thursday Next and we learn about her world - which is ours, if things in history had gone slightly differently.
No spoiling at all here, therefore I only add that she is a fully enjoyable character: a true heroine with a lot of background (and forward...) story and an emotional life.
No idea how Jasper Fforde works, but he's really good at moving backward/forward on the timeline, and inside/outside between reality and books in order to conduct the investigation.
Now I only have to read Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre", at last :)
