The Sisterhood always knows best.
The Guardians will protect and serve.
The Unconsecrated will never relent.
And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth.

But, slowly, Mary's truths are failing her. She's learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future-between the one she loves and the one who loves her.

And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

I really enjoyed the depth of emotion in this strangely touching YA zombie novel. Unlike many novels of this genre, the focus of this story is less on the actual action of fighting off zombies but more on how the lives of the remaining humans are profoundly affected not only by the constant life-threatening presence they have to live with, but the trauma of losing loved ones to it, and the things they do to try to adapt. In this case, the zombie threat was just constant enough to keep the pages swiftly turning, while still allowing the author enough down-time to bring Mary to life as a character. I particularly enjoyed Mary's tendency to forever see the human who each zombie must have been instead of only seeing the monster this person has become.

  • Personally, I loved this book! I think that the whole storyline of a huge "zombie apocalypse" was truly great, and I would definitely give it a re-read!(:

This is a realistic picture of what could happen when the powers that be have all the control, something I fear deep inside. Mary is someone that most girls could relate to, many of us have been in love with someone who seems so far away, my heart often broke for her. I would recommend this, I do ... (continue)

Mary is someone that most girls could relate to, many of us have been in love with someone who seems so far away, my heart often broke for her. I would recommend this, I do however hope for one more book, the ending left me wanting more.
