    In quanto romanzo filosofico, The fountainhead risente delle debolezze di questo genere: personaggi, trama, l'intera struttura del racconto sono subordinate alle idee che Ayn Rand vuole illustrare; e queste idee sono, a mio parere, terribili; certo, le innumerevoli dichiarazioni della necessità o diritto di ogni individuo di poter essere se stesso e libero di esprimere la propria "visione" sono condivisibili - ed è questa parte, credo che affascina i lettori e che ha reso The Fountainhead, come ho letto in qualche recensione, il secondo romanzo più influente della letteratura americana. Ma il resto: la difesa esaltata dell'egotismo, il conseguente discredito gettato su ogni forma di altruismo; le lodi sfrenate del sistema capitalistico americano (a proposito, cosa ne penserebbe la Rand dell'attuale crisi mondiale?), sono francamente indigeste. Resta comunque un libro poderoso, animato da una grande passione, e che senz'altro pretende dal lettore una risposta vigorosa agli interrogativi che pone. Come opera letteraria, vi sono alcuni episodi in cui la Rand si dimostra narratrice di valore, soprattutto nei vivaci dialoghi, che sfoggiano una rara sagacia. Ma non bastabo a eliminare il senso di disagio che questo romanzo mi ha ispirato: un vero pugno allo stomaco, e al cervello.

    The 2 pricks deserve each other. Horrible hateful people, rubbish philosophy and an overlong shitty book.

    i read it when i was 17 and fell for howard roark, so very manly and individualistic. actually the hot single encounter with a spoiled rich girl borders rape, seen in perspective.

  • I read The Fountain Head before I read Atlas Shrugged. I actually enjoyed this one. Maybe that is why Atlas Shrugged was such a let down!
