The wind has always dictated Vianne Rocher's every move, buffeting her from the French village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes to the crowded streets of Paris. Cloaked in a new identity, that of widow Yanne Charbonneau, she opens a chocolaterie on a small Montmartre street, determined to still the wind at last and keep her daughters, Anouk and baby Rosette, safe. But the weather vane soon turns, and Zozie de l'Alba blows into their lives. Charming and enigmatic, Zozie provides the brightness that Yanne's life needs—as her vivacity and bold lollipop shoes dazzle rebellious and impressionable preadolescent Anouk. But beneath their new friend's benevolent façade lies a ruthless treachery—for devious, seductive Zozie has plans that will shake their world to pieces.

Chocolat was a fun read about enjoying life and being an individual, so it's only natural that Harris explores the other side of that; conformity due to fear. This book picks up almost 4 years later, with Vianne and her two daughters living in Paris. Vianne is no longer a confident woman because of an "accident" that occured. She has forsaken magic, she dresses plain, and she is depressed. Things seem to get better when charismatic Zozie comes to work at the shop, but the reader discovers from the beginning that she has other intentions.

This novel is not upbeat, it deals with Vianne's loss of identity, her fear of losing her children, and Anouk's painful adolescent experiences. Harris reveals the dark side of magic and it's utterly chilling. However, don't let this turn you off to the book because it's spectacular. We still get eccentric characters who befriend the Rocher's through their new chocolaterie (and Roux returns!) There is a happy ending, not to worry.

I enjoyed Chocolat a lot more that I enjoyed this book. Somehow the characters were not as believable particularly Zozie. She captures some of the changes in relationship between mother and daughter during the teen years but other than that this was not my favorite novel of Joanne Harris and I am normally a fan of hers.
