Although much centered in the American side of WWII, the set of interviews in the book reveal impressive aspects of the war which were completely unknown to me.

Racism in the American territory against Japanese people and in the Army towards black soldiers, the effects of the A-bomb, the testimonies of prisoners of war and forced workers and the adventures of behind-the-lines 'commandos' are just some of the things that have shocked me.

The perception of combat varies greatly between someone fighting for just 42 days and describing hell on earth, and someone doing that for some four years and referring to it like more or less routine.

After all, it looks like that surviving such a war is just a matter of luck.
