If you have only read Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and think that this book is another fantasy for children, you are totally mistaken. Roald has proven himself to be such a versatile writer. The short stories here are totally unexpected. The main characters lie, commit adultery, forgo their dreams, etc. It's very challenging for me as a reader coz I find myself identifying with the characters, but then at the same time I know that I should not. And then as the stories come to an end, I come to know myself better and am able to really think about humanity. Roald is such a great story-teller. The tension is so strong that it's hard to put the book down. Don't read it when you are taking the bus, you'll find yourself reading when you get off the bus.
