A fascinating account of the struggle between the British and Russian empires to conquer Central Asia for geopolitical and commercial reasons. The British wanted to protect India from the Russian expansion by extending their power and control over Central Asia. It’s not certain that the Russians really wanted to reach and conquer India (although the military wanted to), but surely they wanted to expand their territories into Asia, going from Turkey to China. The events described in this book shaped Asia, and we still see the consequences today.
This history book is so well written that is gripping as an adventure novel. Although this is not a work of fiction, some of the characters involved in the Great Game, and described in this book, had lives that would dwarf Indiana Jones’ adventures.
