I found it hard to read the pages that went on and on about the Occupation, the experiences that people had to endure in that horrible time. But the parts that were not about the Occupation in England, I found those parts highly entertaining, charming, romantic, funny and spontaneous. The book is written through corresponding mail between the characters. As I read the book I found myself falling in love with all this people, their simple lives and the beauty of the island.

Much of the novel is concerned with German occupation of a small English Channel island during WWII, and of the intertwined fates of islanders during the Holocaust, one of which is quite mysterious. Near the end, however, the novel's author evidently passed away, and her niece finished the story; perhaps this explains why the story becomes more of a simple romance than the earlier portions of the story had been.
