    • Reread many many years after my first (and second and third etc...) reading and The Hobbit is still a wonderful read. It reads almost as if it was spoken, not written. Not as dense or detailed as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but sets in motion the events of that trilogy.

The Hobbit seems a much lighter forefather to the Lord of Rings, though it not without danger. There are the giant spiders of Mirkwood, the goblins of the mountain and, of course, Smaug. But it is full of light-hearted moments too. It does seem to be more for children, but in this book Bilbo takes possession of a seemingly harmless ring. Sixty years later, it will be a much more serious thing.
