Many of the characters are expert practitioners of Wishful Thinking and Confabulation, which makes them funny and so similar to us, the readers. A light, paradoxical humor pervades the whole book - so British. This book comes from a time (the 1920s) when kids were still kids and adults were still adults - not the neverending adolescence of post-modern times. Refreshing - it brings you back to the nice times of yore, when people died of TB in their 30s and children were allowed to be childish.
