    When the Homo Sapiens came around, what happened to the Neanderthals? Paleoanthropologists don't offer an unanimous answer to the question still, but fifty-six years ago Golding used his imagination to create a language and a world for this encounter. The language is gorgeous, Golding manages to convey a way of thinking and of seeing the world which is completely alien to the human experience as we know it.
    There are many ways to read the sudden and unexpected shift of focus at the end of the book, but one of them has an echo in our times: Homo Sapiens vs. Neanderthals, was it the first clash of civilizations? We'll never know it, but Golding's novel gives us a lot to think about it.
