a small masterpiece for pre-teens and adults too
It the story of a nipper living in a train station in 30s Paris. Full of conjuring, automata, mysteries, clockwork, sadness and old/new family ties. A collectors' book and an ingenious combination of novel, graphic novel, silent film.

Loved every single page!!!
The book in once sentence: A 12-year-old Parisian orphan makes a startling discovery of a man's true - and astounding - identity.
My thoughts: This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read, and I really, really think you should read it. No, get your own copy!

A subtle world in black and white
With The Invention of Hugo Cabret (Scholastic, pounds 12.99), the American illustrator/author Brian Selznick seems to have invented a new kind of book. It's at once a picture book, a graphic novel, a rattling good yarn and an engaging celebration of ... (read full critics)
