When Marshal of the Nobility Pozdnyshev suspects his wife of having an affair with her music partner, his jealousy consumes him and drives him to murder. Controversial upon publication in 1890, The Kreutzer Sonata illuminates Tolstoy’s then-feverish Christian ideals, his conflicts with lust and the hypocrisies of nineteenth-century marriage, and his thinking on the role of art and music in society.

In her Introduction, Doris Lessing shows how relevant The Kreutzer Sonata is to our understanding of Tolstoy the artist, as well as to feminism and literature. This Modern Library Paperback Classic also contains Tolstoy’s Sequel to the Kruetzer Sonata.

I've found some truth in the Kreutzer Sonata of Tolstoj, psychological osservation, free thinking...it's a refreshing, astonishing view to be read nowadays as we totally follow to the logic of fun, the prevalence of the body, the economy of sex. It sounded highly idealistic to me. How would you want to criticise Tolstoj? Hey, we won't be so narrow-minded. And don't worry, you don't have to stop copulating (not yet...hey it's ok, we have viagra and plastic surgery and prostitutes, so you can hope to never stop wanting it)....Sorry but I'm just fucking (and we use that word all the time) fed about the predominant political correctness, the mainstream thinking of today.
