For someone who read horsey books when younger this book was enjoyable. It is not written as a masterpiece but it was hard to put down.

For someone who read horsey books when younger this book was enjoyable. It is not written as a masterpiece but it was hard to put down.
The Caradynes are an Irish family who breed and train horses. The youngest daughter Catriona is, at 13, horse mad and is an exceptional all round "horsewoman". At odds with her mother who hates horses and wants her to be ladylike. Lady Selina Healy boards her horse at their stables and little by little enters their lives.
This novel not only is horsey but set in 1970 touches "Irish" problems, some metioned in the background ( the "troubles" in northern Ireland) others that touch the family more drastically, Isabel,Catriona's mother, with her convent upbringing and her unhealthy "preoccupation" with the Church. Sybil, the sister, helping battered wives who are not helped by the law as in a family dispute a husband has the right to order his wife about in any way. Selina who finds herself at the wrong end of her husband's fist and realises how women are not cared for by the Irish law.
