  • 'Last of the Mohicans': An Enduring Tale of Love and Loss on the American frontier

Although Natty ‘Hawk-eye’ Bumppo is the hero of The Last of the Mohicans—as much as anyone can be—he is not the title character. That honour belongs to the son of his Indian companion, Hawkeye, and as the paleface ‘Yangees’ battle for control of the ... (read full critics)

Like I did with this one, quickly changed to another book (I'd been reading it for days but I never made it through halfway). It was just too boring for me to handle. A more engaging story and the message would have come across better, too.

  • Of all the books that I've read, this is the only one that made me cry at the ending. I picked it up quite casually as something to read on the train home from work one day, and initially found it slow-going, but once into it, I couldn't put it down. The fate of Uncas had me sniffling away. Beaut ... (continue)

  • It took me quite a while to get through this. It's quite different from the movie which is what inspired me to read it. They both have their qualities, but this is one of those situations where I actually liked the movie better and appreciate the changes they made.

  • Good story, but...

Second of the Leatherstocking Tales that I've read, and probably the last, because Cooper's style makes Dickens' look terse.

The movie "The last of the Mohicans" was based on this novel. I love the movie so I read this book. The movie has changed the story. Hawk-eye is not Chingachgook's son, they are friends. Of course, the girl Cora did not felt in love with Hawk-eye. I think Hawk-eye is nearly as old as Chingachgook in the original story. Besides these things, the movie story line is similar to the book. In fact this book is one the Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales. To me, early Indian's culture and their history of protecting their tribes are always attractive.
