What lies between Quite Good and So-So?

The Lincoln Lawyer does. It's pretty good, but just doesn't rise above the average legal thriller enough to pull itself into to quite good territory. This is a perfect candidate for 2.5 stars.

Michael Connelly gets better and better! This novel about the lawyer Mickey Haller is magnificent in scope, full of twists and turns in the plot, gripping courtroom settings, and a great collection of characters. It is engrossing right to the last page!

What will you do if you were Mickey Haller?

Pretended if you were a defecne lawyer, what is your paramount duty? Defence for your client at his or her best interest no matter if he or she is innocent or not? Pretended if you were a defecne lawyer, what is your paramount duty? Defence for your client at his or her best interest no matter if he or she is innocent or not? How about if you suddenly find that your client is not only guilty, but also is a devil, and at the same time, your former client is the real innocence one? Will you break the lawyer-client confidentiality between you and the devil client in order to save the innocence one?

Mickey Haller, a defence lawyer, who doesn’t care about guilt or innocence at all. His day-to-day duty is to negotiate with the prosecutors and his client to “act at his client’s best interest”. To do this, Mickey needs to find the crack in the grey area of law and lives in a world without truth!

In a usual day, Haller was engaged by a rich client, who had been arrested for attempted rape and murder to a prostitute. At first sight, Mickey saw a profitable case, however, this case was a nightmare and Mickey regretted to take this job eventually. As a defence Lawyer, Mickey has to choose between justice and professionalism: should he report to the police of what did his evil client do in order to do the justice but breaks the professional conduct? or should he maintain the professional conduct in not breaking the lawyer-client confidentiality without doing the right thing to uphold the justice?

Having read the fiction, I love this fiction very much. The first few chapters of the book may not easy to read. You may find that there are too many things seems irrelevant to the case and you will soon jump to a conclusion that the evil client is an innocence one. However, having gone through the first few chapters, you just can’t stop reading, especially when hearing begins!

The story is exciting, and the cross-examination in the courtroom is indeed a lively one. In fact, you can’t breathe when you’re reading that part, and you may automatically generate an image that Mickey is standing in front of you and questioning the witnesses, the victim and the evil!

Be caution when you’re reading “The Lincoln Lawyer”, every detail is the development of the story afterwards, especially every word and every move that Mickey took in the courtroom … …

However, don't believe it will happen in reality. In the real world, I am sure that the main character would have been disqualified as a lawyer in the middle of the book for breaching so many professional rules, and I am sure a lawyer can find some way to escape from the "dilemma" faced by the main character.

The book is interesting but don't expect in reality your lawyer will do the same for you.

There are similarities with Michael Connelly's heroes Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller. Both bereft of a parent in childhood, in Haller's case the death of his defence lawyer father when Mickey was only five years old. Single having been divorced with a child, a girl. There the similarities end. Harry Bosch is a detective and Haller a defence lawyer. You get the picture. The majority of Haller's client's have gone down on drugs charges but this time he gets a rapist who he thinks may be the innocent man. As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that this client is not that man, but a convicted client Menendez who Haller persuaded to agree to charges to get a reduced sentence is the innocent man. After his discovery Haller takes the decision to get Menendez aquitted after several years in jail. It becomes a dangerous journey and Haller's investigative agent is killed and his ex wife and child are under threat. Pacy and a read you might take on holiday. I have had a run of Connelly's books recently and I have to say I am in no rush to read any more.
