  • Grisham at his near best!

Not the best of his books but reminded me how much I enjoy his books with plenty of twist along the way.

The ending is not exhilarating. There is no miracle like David beating Goliath and everything seems plausible and realistic. Therefore, I'd say that the climax is a bit disappointing. But overall, I've learnt something more about litigations. There are actually possible "penalties" for frivolous lawsuits against the lawyers as well as the plaintiffs. The author's writing has made the readers feel that something big or perhaps miraculous would happen. It's definitely a page-turner.

The actual litigation was kind of dull when Nadine Karros showed off her medical expert witnesses. It gave the readers a glimpse of hope when David Zinc was able to attack the company's (Varrick's) reputation and disclosed their drug testing practice in poor developing countries because it's cheaper, there is not much regulation in these countries and they can avoid litigation if things go badly. Nevertheless, David still lost. The consolation prize was the lead poisoning lawsuit against Sonesta Games and his helping the Burmese family gain $5 million settlement though the loss of the Thuya Khaing at the end is still sad. And more importantly, that's the beginning of David's specialty in product liability law.

The only typo that I've noticed was on p. 36 (5th line): "No swaet. ..." should obviously be "No sweat. ...".
