I think there are only two possibilities when it comes to Stephen King, especially when he's writing as Richard Bachman: either you love it or you hate it.
I really liked this book. The setting reminds a lot of "The Running Man": same futuristic, hopeless and ruthless world controlled by a militar authority turned into a dictatorship; same cruel "panem et circenses" to keep the "Crowd" happy; same crude descriptions of physical exhaustion and death. There is a sense of impending tragedy and yet the clear certainty that life itself, society as it is, is madness under cover.
If you like Bachman and you're not too easily impressed by violence, this is a good book to keep you company on the road for a while.
