Waugh once wrote to his agent: «The tale should not be read as a satire on morticians but as a study of the Anglo-American cultural impasse with the mortuary as a jolly setting»... Well, forget that!
"The Loved One" is a witty, dark and extremely amusing social satire openly mocking Americans and less openly (or maybe involuntarily?) teasing the Brits as well.
If you appreciate black comedies and if you manage to get past that pompous first chapter —which is nothing like the rest of the novel— you'll find it clever and entertaining.
So keep calm, carry on and get ready to have some (slightly macabre) fun.
