I've loved this movie for years and it was great to read the book it was based on. It's always interesting to see how writing the 30s and 40s was a lot less scrutinized than Hollywood. THey say this is the father of all the "hard-boiled" detectives we now have: well, it is hard-boiled alright, and it would seem that in eighty years his descendants have not gone terribly far from here! A great read, and a very convoluted, gripping story, set in splendid San Francisco.
