In this story, second in the series, Martin Beck is about to begin a well-looked-forward-to holiday with his wife and family when he is suddenly pulled off to investigate the disappearance of a journalist in Budapest. Beck doesn't want to take this case on, but his penchant for solving mysteries is stronger than his desire to be on holiday. It is not just devotion to duty that drives Beck but his obstinate determination to solve every crime in which he is involved. To this end he investigates even the smallest and unlikeliest of clues. This story follows that pattern the moment Beck sets foot in Budapest. One of the most chilling episodes in the story is when on a dark night when Beck is out alone in a city he doesn't know and believes he is being followed. For him it is a new experience. Many times in the past he has had to trail suspects but has never known what it is like to be trailed by an unknown someone. Brilliant!
