The book jacket mentions Chandler and Douglas Adams, Terry Gilliam, David Lynch and Jorge Luis Borges, while US critics have tossed in Kafka and Paul Auster. And Berry's debut detective novel is indeed imaginative, fantastical, sometimes inexplicable ... (read full critics)

One of the best detective stories I have recently read.
Well planned, well written, original and really enthralling. Plenty of twists and turns in the story which keep you reading and wishing for more. A visonary atmosphere countered by an absolutely detatched and clear cut style makes the book even more enjoyable. The improbable detective who manages to solve a complex whodunit mistery, despite the suggestions of a rambling and not so useful manual, becomes so familiar after just a few pages that you seem to have known him for ages.
What more can one ask from a book?
That it is the first of a long series or that there's an extra manual of detection somewhere. I'm well aware, though, that miracles rarely happen twice in a row.
